Oonagh has a BA in English and Philosophy from University College Cork and M.Phil in Irish Theatre from Trinity College Dublin. Her passion for directing film was sparked when she got the job as casting director to Ken Loach on his Palm d’Or winning THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY. Since graduating from the NFTS in London, Oonagh has written and directed several award-winning shorts, a Reel Art documentary and TV pilot for RTE.
In 2016, Oonagh shadow-directed on the comedy drama series CAN’T COPE WON’T COPE with Deadpan Pictures and her most recent short film FIVE LETTERS TO THE STRANGER WHO WILL DISSECT MY BRAIN won Best Director of an Irish Short at the 2018 Cork International Film Festival, a Discovery Award and Best Irish Short at the 2019 Dublin International Film Festival and the 2019 Irish Writers Guild Zebbie Award for Best Short Screenplay..
Oonagh has participated in several Screen Skill Ireland initiatives, Berlinale Talents, She Writes, the ‘Apulia Experience’, Torino TFL Labs and Guiding Lights. Oonagh’s first feature screenplay SNOW ON BEARA was selected for the Athena IRIS Screenplay Lab in NYC and the BBC Drama Writers Room. It is in development with Screen Ireland. Barbara has over ten years of experience producing commercials in London and LA. In 2016, Barbara produced the US indie comedy feature THE OUTDOORSMAN, starring Sasheer Zamata and Brent Morin. It premiered at the Austin Film Festival and was distributed internationally.
In London, Barbara produced two award winning shorts: the Film London funded FIRE (directed by 2019 Screen Star of Tomorrow Chris Andrews), that was BAFTA long-listed and A CAKE FOR MABEL directed by Jane McGee. MABEL was nominated for Best UK Short (East End FF) and Best Producer (Underwire) and won Best Director and Best Lead Performance at Thurrock International Film Festival. She produced the RTE Storyland pilot ON THE HEMLINE for RTE and is developing it as the series NOTIONS with Oonagh.
